Pigmentation occurs when an excess of melanin deposits in the skin. It is  caused by sun damage, acne scars, Irritation, hormonal changes, Age, Pollution. While external factors cannot be controlled, there are some natural and healthy ways to lighten skin.

Is Melanin bad??

Melanin, a brown color pigment,  is an antioxidant that protects the skin from sun damage, the DNA damage of lower layers of skin during sunburn, its blessing in dusguise. It also helps skin repair itself after acne and other kind of infection. The skin makes enormous amounts of melanin to stop acne inflammation and sunburn.

Why do we not like Melanin?

Because it makes our skin look dark. In India, we often associate lighter skin with healthy skin. And Melanin also makes our skin look uneven and pigmented. I would bet if any one would like spotted and unven skintone. So need a lighteners that both lightens and reduces spots.

Is it safe to reduce Melanin in skin?

Common ingredinets that control skin melanin in the skin is Hydroquinone, it is ctyotoxic( toxic to the skin cells) and cause side effects like skin inflammation, irritation, increased sun sensitivity and dark, bluish patches on the skin (when used for longer time). For this reason Hydroquinone is banend in Europe. But its alternative Arbutin also works so much similar to Hydroquinone, with more or less similar effects.
